Review of "Animal Among Us" by The Headless Critic

Animal Among Us – 2019

Production by: Hollow Tree Productions, Mr. Lion Productions
Distribution by: Uncork’d Entertainment

“This is a story about a monster.” Fifteen years ago an animal attack at Camp Merrymaker led to the deaths of two teenage girls. The creature that killed the two girls was never found. Author Roland Baumgarner (Christian Oliver) capitalized on the events at Camp Merrymaker writing his one and only hit novel. By doing so he ruined the perception of the camp hurting its chances to reopen, making it essentially a tourist attraction. The campgrounds have been closed ever since, until now. Sisters Anita (Larisa Oleynik) and Poppy Bishop (Christine Donlon) are reopening Camp Merrymaker and have invited author Roland Baumgarner to attend the grand opening. All horror stories end the same, you either kill the monster or it kills you.

A 90’s Nickelodeon star, a MMA legend and first time feature filmmaking duo John Woodruff and Jonathan Murphy make a bigfoot movie. A bit of confusion in logic in our lead female characters drag a would-be creature feature out of the woods and into a soap opera at the end of Christian Olivier’s over-the-top character. Not even Alex Mack can save this case. The bright side of these dark woods is Burl Wolf played by Don Frye. While the MMA and professional wrestling legend doesn’t have the broadest range, the Tom Selleck mustached man’s man brings a charisma to the screen that stands out. How a Don Frye character named Burl Wolf doesn’t have a battle scene with any kind of monster in a movie titled Animal Among Us is beyond be. All horror stories end the same, you either kill the monster or it kills you but what if you learn to live with the monster?
