Trophy Heads – 2014

Production by: Full Moon Features
Distribution by: Full Moon Features

Max (Adam Noble Roberts) is an adult who’s still living at home with his Mom (Maria Olsen). A movie fanatic, Max has been perfectly happy living in his mommy’s basement, watching horror movies all his life. Max’s Mom will do whatever it takes to make her loving son happy. When Max finally finds an inspiration in life, Mom is there to support him. Even if it means killing scream queens. Linnea Quigley (Return of the Living Dead), Darcy DeMoss (Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives), Brinke Stevens (The Slumber Party Massacre), Michelle Bauer, (Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers), Denice Duff (Subspecies movies) and Jacqueline Lovell (Femalien) all make the casting call to be kidnapped by deranged, uber fan Max as he forces them to reenact his favorite scenes of their deaths. It doesn’t matter if, “I don’t want to be in your fucking movie!” Scream Queens will do what they do best, scream as they die!

Production values are low in this Charles Band feature. As each actress is kidnapped, they’re taken to a dungeon basement that looks like the set of a low budget 80’s film. With the theme of the film, perhaps low budget 80’s was the point. One thing the film doesn’t skimp on is fun. The competitive nature of the scream queens, even in the face of death is appropriately amusing without venturing into complete spoof territory. The mother son relationship of Max and his Mom is equally as enjoyable. I absolutely love Maria Olsen in this movie. She looks like a real mother and the lack of explanation of her helping her son’s obsession is perfect psychosis.

Max is a weasely, little creep who collects heads of the dead. When scream queens die, it's the over the top performances you want and expect from these beauties. Famous faces adorning Max’s wall as Trophy Heads is the kind of amusement you get in this film. The ladies of horror aren’t the only surprises the film holds. Kristine DeBell of Meatballs and Carel Struycken who plays Lurch in the Adams Family movies and Arquillen in Men in Black are both brought in. Stuart Gordon, writer and director of such cult favorites as Re-Animator, Castle Freak, Robo Jox and Honey I Shrunk the Kids also has a cameo.

I watched Trophy Heads as a full length feature. Film continuity is a little jumbled when watching this way. I found out later that the film is a web series. Killing scream queens is a brilliant idea for a tv series and someone should really pick it up as a weekly. Seemingly without much of a budget, Charles Band put together a web series that’s more entertaining than most Hollywood features. I believe this is my third Charles Band film. I can say that Trophy Heads was even more enjoyable than watching Gary Busey as The Gingerdead Man. I enjoyed this movie more than I should have and I think many others will to.
